DISNEY WALT: (1901-1966) American animator, Academy Award winner. An original souvenir programme for Walt Disney's Fantasia, entitled Fantasia in Technicolor and Fantasound, published by Walt Disney Productions, 1940, signed (´Walt Disney´) by Disney to an inside page beneath his portrait and across brief printed text. The large folio programme, profusely illustrated throughout in colour and black and white with artwork, character studies, production designs and behind-the-scenes photographs, provides an extensive contemporary record of the production of Disney's groundbreaking animated feature, including an introduction by Walt Disney and material relating to conductor Leopold Stokowski, commentator Deems Taylor and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The programme is devoted to the celebrated musical sequences comprising Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, Paul Dukas's The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, Ponchielli's Dance of the Hours, Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain and Schubert's Ave Maria, with details of the artists, animators and technicians responsible for their visual interpretation. Further material is devoted to the innovative Fantasound recording and reproduction process developed for the film. Some extensive, heavy scuffing and tears to the front cover and title page, and with some light creasing and minor age wear to the inside pages, FR

Fantasia received its world premiere at the Broadway Theatre, New York, on 13th November 1940. Conceived by Disney as a new form of cinematic entertainment in which animation would provide a visual interpretation of classical music, the production united the talents of the Disney studio with Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Of particular importance was Fantasound, the pioneering multichannel sound system developed especially for the film and an important early application of stereophonic sound to motion pictures. The elaborate equipment required for its presentation meant that Fantasia was initially shown in only a small number of specially equipped theatres, where it was presented in a prestigious roadshow format rather more akin to a concert event than a conventional film screening.
