Three volumes bound in one, 4to (10 7/8 x 8 7/8 in.; 275 x 227mm). 3 engraved titles, 2 engraved portraits, and 57 plates after Thomas Doughty and others, 54 of which hand-colored, in-text wood engravings; some browning, staining and foxing, a few leaves with short marginal tears, some plates and leaves repaired, 1 plate supplied (vol. II, plate 18). Later quarter burgundy morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, second with gilt-titled black morocco label, others with repeat gilt floral diamond pattern, edges stained red; edges worn.

First edition. The "first major sport print colorplate book produced in America" (Bennett). Thomas Doughty was a famous painter of the day, and the founding father of the Hudson River School.
