t’Amsterdam, By Jan Jacobsz Schipper, [1657]-1658. 14 Parts in 1 vol. With 3 engraved frontispieces (one incorporating a portrait of Jacob Cats), 10 engraved vignettes on divisional titles, 1 fold. double-p. engraving (“Sic Transit Gloria Mvndi”), 1 double-p. engraving (“Afbeeldinghe Des Huwelyx Onder De Gedaente Van Een Fuyk”), 2 full-p. engravings (one incorporating a portrait of Jacob Cats) & ca. 400 engraved emblematic text-ills. after i.a. Adriaen van de Venne. Small folio (ca. 36,5 x 22,5 cm.), 19th-cent. gilt panelled brown morocco, both covers with symmetrical gilt floral ornaments in inner panel, gilt ribbed spine. – Added: a poor copy of an early 17th-cent. Dutch Bible (“Biblia, Dat is: De gantsche H. Schrifture, vervattende alle de Canonijcke Boecken des Ouden en des Nieuwen Testaments [..]. Tot Leyden, Gedruckt bij Paulus Aertsz. van Ravensteyn, Voor de Weduwe ende Erfgenamen van wijlen Hillebrant Jacobsz. van Wouw [..]”, ca. 1637, 6 parts in 1 vol. With engr. frontisp. & 3 (of 5) fold. engr. maps. Warranted in black ink by “B[arent]. Langenes”, dated “1637”. Sold with all faults (not subject to return): spine dam., bookblock loose, lacks 2 engr. maps & 1 engr. plan, 1 text-leaf (e1 in part 2) dam. (with loss of letters), partly marg. waterstained).

Second edition of the collected literary works by the Dutch author Jacob Cats (1577-1660) profusely illustrated with attractive emblematic engravings (depicting i.a. 17th-cent. Dutch daily life) after designs by i.a. the Dutch artist Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne (ca. 1587-1662) comprising i.a. “PROTEUS, Ofte Minne-Beelden Verandert in Sinne-Beelden” (1658); “SELF-STRYT. Dat is: Onderlinge Worstelinge Van Goede En Quade Gedachten [..]” (1657); “HOUWELICK, Dat Is, Het gansche Beleyt des Echten-Staets [..]” (1657); “GALATHEA, Of Herder-Minneklacht [..]” (1657); “KLAGENDE MAEGHDEN, En Raet voor de selve [..]” (1657); “SPIEGEL Van Den Ouden En Nieuwen Tyt [..]” (1657); “S’ WEERELTS BEGIN, MIDDEN, EYNDE, Besloten in den Trou-Ringh, Met den Proef-Steen Van den Selven [..]” (1657) & “OUDERDOM, Buyten-Leven, En Hof-Gedachten, Op Sorghvliet [..]” (1658). – Lacks 1 double-p. engraving (“Dodelycke Vytgang Van Syn Hoogheyt Fred.
