This work is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean, and the varnish is clear. There are small and scattered discoloured retouchings visible, for example in the sky upper left and in his collar. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these, and reveals further intervention: a handful of fine lines and spots in his face with more concentrated areas in his lips and below his eyes (the largest approx. 1 x 1 cm.), and along a repaired horizontal tear across his collar approx. 15 cm. long. There are also further small spots scattered throughout but these are largely cosmetic. None of these impede the legibility of the image, which appears in overall good condition, and is ready to hang.
Provenance:
Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Christie's, 25-26 November 2014, lot 52, where acquired by the present owners.
