Condition Report:
Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. A degree of wear is visible throughout the composition. A handful of areas of discoloured retouching are visible in the centre of the sky and upper left, the largest of which measures approx. 4 by 4 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and reveals very little other intervention, save for some pinprick retouchings following a couple of vertical lines, just right of centre, possibly caused by the canvas being rolled in the past, and a short diagonal line of retouching to a small scratch, lower left, measuring approx. 5 cm. The majority of the composition would appear to remain untouched, and the painting is in overall fair condition.
Provenance:
With American Art Galleries, New York (according to a label on the reverse).
