Daghestan Prayer Rug
second half 19th century, 133 x 115 cm, East Caucasus
The material and aesthetic quality of this white-ground prayer rug woven in a diamond lattice design is impressive. The comparatively wide format provides plenty of space for the dense field design to unfold. At no point does it touch the red sawteeth running along the inner side of the yellow surround that separates the field from the border.
The rug was owned by a French family for several generations.
HERRMANN, EBERHART, Seltene Orientteppiche V. Munich 1983, no. 24 *** KAFFEL, RALPH, Caucasian Prayer Rugs. London 1998, no. 66
Condition
Good condition except for two stitched tears in the white field.
