Bronze sculpture after the model of the (Spanish) artist Jean Francois Marie Etcheto (1853-1889) , early 20th century. Signed by the artist. Fumière et Cie successeurs - French foundry. The work portrays François Villon, born in Paris in 1431, one of the most elusive, ambiguous, enigmatic and fascinating personalities in the entire history of literature. Villon’s poetry is characterised by a very strong autobiographical component. In his compositions he inserts personal acquaintances and environments he lived in, openly speaking of love and hate with no reserve. His poems are a bitter smile towards existence; a smile that enjoys the most troubled parts of human as, in the final analysis, it is not so much our virtues as our vices that unite us. ‘I've been poor since my youth. of wretched and modest condition. My father never had great wealth, nor his grandfather, who was called Horace; poverty is at our heels. On the graves of my ancestors. may it please God to welcome their souls, no sceptre nor crown are engraved’. François Villon. Half-bust mounted on a wooden support, included in the lot. Size, support included: 27 x 13 cm. Pictures are an integral part of the description.
