Dalziel Brothers. Dalziel's Bible Gallery, limited edition, 62 mounted india paper proofs, Forrest
Dalziel Brothers. Dalziel's Bible Gallery, number 335 of 1000 copies, 62 mounted india paper proofs of wood-engravings by the Dalziel Brothers after Leighton, Solomon, Sandys, Houghton, Watts, Burne Jones, Holman Hunt & others, mounted on stubs, occasional spotting to mounts, Forrest Reid's copy with his ink signature to front free endpaper, original half vellum, a little rubbed and soiled, folio, 1881.*** Forrest Reid (1875-1947), Irish novelist and critic, author of Illustrators of the Sixties of 1928, the definitive work on Victorian wood-engraving: "The Bible Gallery is the most sumptuous of all our books. It was issued in an edition of 1000 copies, with the designs carefully printed on India paper. But the price - five guineas - proved too high; commercially the work was a failure, only some 200 copies being sold. The original idea, when the artists were commissioned to make their drawings, was to print the text also; but this plan was abandoned, and the huge folio contains the designs alone." p.49.
