Daniel Maclise, RA, Irish 1806-1870- Begging for Mercy; oil on canvas, signed 'D. Maclise' (lower right), 46 x 36 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Maclise was a prominent Irish artist, and one of the leading history painters of the period, producing highly theatrical depictions of historical and literary scenes. He was highly sought-after amongst contemporaries, and completed two dramatic large-scale murals in the House of Lords depicting significant moments in the careers of military heroes Wellington and Nelson. Works by Maclise can also be found in the collections of London’s National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Academy, and the V&A Museum.
