Other Notes:
American ex-pat painter Daniel Ridgway Knight spent most of his career in France, painting realistic and romantic views of peasants and rural life. Idyllic portraits rendered in soft light, like the present, painting feature beautiful, verdant settings, authentic costume and narrative-focused compositions that capture the beauty and everyday activities of the rural life of French peasant women as they work, rest, and gather together.

Knight was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1858 to 1861. He continued his arts education in Paris where he studied under artists Charles Gleyre and Alexandre Cabanel. During the American Civil War, Knight returned to Philadelphia and served in the Union Army. In 1871, Knight moved back to France, where he spent most of the rest of his life developing his artistic career.

"A Trysting Place" is a lovely example of the type of compositional motif Knight is celebrated for and features a young woman in traditional dress and clogs as she pauses on a rural footbridge that crosses a small, green river. In her right hand the figure holds a sheaf of wildflowers flowers by her side and places her left hand on the handrail, gestures that reinforce the notion that a private meeting with a beau is about to take place.
