Object Project #1, 2006
oil on panel
35 1/2 x 29 1/2 in. (90.2 x 74.9 cm.), frame: 49 1/2 x 43 3/4 x 2 1/4 in. (125.7 x 111.1 x 5.7 cm.)

Private Collection, Colorado

Daniel Sprick occupies a singular place among contemporary American realists, his paintings distinguished not merely by technical virtuosity but by an almost meditative stillness that invites the viewer to linger rather than glance. His muted palettes and sense of quiet encourage slow contemplation, whether the subject is a solitary figure or an arrangement of humble objects.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1953, Sprick's path to painting began in childhood and led him through formal training at the Ramon Froman School of Art and the National Academy of Design in New York, culminating in a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Northern Colorado in 1978. That grounding in classical technique—filtered through the influence of Northern Renaissance masters such as Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden—remains legible in every canvas he produces.

What sets Sprick apart from many of his realist contemporaries is the democratic breadth of his gaze. "I'm interested in all walks of life, everyone," the artist has said of his choice of subjects, "some that may be considered conventionally beautiful and others that may not, and everyone in between." This sensibility extends across his still lifes as well, which recall the Dutch and Flemish traditions, juxtaposing the sumptuous—silver tableware, starched linens—with the mundane: tin cans, old bottles, arranged with quiet, harmonious balance.
