Daredevil #1 (Marvel, 1964) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white to white pages. A breathtaking copy of this Silver Age key issue featuring the origin and first appearance of Daredevil, as well as the first appearances of longtime stalwart supporting players Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. Debuting in 1964, Daredevil was the last major character to appear during the Marvel Age's first wave of titles. Often (and unfairly) seen as a second-tier character, The Man Without Fear has nonetheless maintained a steady following during the 60 years since his debut, and surges in popularity every 10 years or so: in fact, he's poised for another boost with his return to the small screen via a cameo appearance in the Echo miniseries and next year's Daredevil: Born Again streaming series. While copies are relatively plentiful in high-grade, there are only a scant 218 on CGC's census that are in Universal VF/NM 9.0 or better -- 261 if you include Qualified, Signature Series, and Restored grades as well. This stunner is one of a mere three in NM/MT 9.8 (and the first we've encountered in this grade), and there are only 35 (Universal or otherwise) in NM+ 9.6. Silver Age Marvel keys in this grade are exceedingly rare; out of the dozen or so Marvel heroes who debuted in 1961-64, all but Hawkeye (Tales of Suspense #57), Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (X-Men #4), and Iron Man (Tales of Suspense #39) top out at NM+ 9.6 (by the way, that CGC NM/MT 9.8 copy of ToS #39 is also featured in this auction). There are only six CGC NM/MT copies of Captain America's return to comics in Avengers #4, published the month before Daredevil #1. Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers provided the Fantastic Four "headshots" for the cover box; the rest of the cover and the story art were created by the great Bill Everett. This was the only time he worked on the title. This book is currently #22 on Overstreet's Top 50 Silver Age Comics list, and likely to climb a little higher. Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $29,000. CGC census 3/24: 3 in 9.8, none higher. HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
