Impact glass or crater glass is the result of a terrestrial rock formation melting and turning into glass when large amounts of energy are released during massive meteorite impacts. In contrast to tektites which are essentially hardened jets of rock vapor ejected from the crater, impact glass is “just” melted rock material. Crater glass contains more water than tektites, and it is found in the close vicinity of the impact site. Darwin glass is mostly black to grayish and opaque. The finds mainly consist of small pieces that weigh just a few grams and have break surfaces. Therefore, large pieces are traded with a higher price per gram than smaller ones, because they are very rare. Furthermore, the rare grey to green and transparent pieces as well as pieces with flowing structures are more sought after as well. Size of the scale cube 1 x 1 x 1 x cm.
