Oil on canvas. 61 x 91 cm; in a very beautiful frame ''of the time''. - Possibly a variation of the painting by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, which is in National Gallery of Victoria in Australia, but in the arrangement of the figures in different colouring even more similar to the Bozzetto in the Cognacq-Jay Collection in Paris. The Paris sketch as well as the 2.5 x 3.5 metre composition of the banquet in Melbourne originally belonged to the approximately 20 paintings commissioned or acquired by the art connoisseur and agent Count Francesco Algarotti between 1743 and 1747 for the Dresden court, namely for August III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, to complete the Dresden collection. - In the available correspondence between the former owner, the conductor Wilhelm Furtwaengler, and the restorer Wilhelm Vetter from 1933, who attributes the painting to Giambattista's son, it is assumed that the signature was lost when the painting was trimmed. // Das Gastmahl der Kleopatra : Venezianischer Meister des 18. Jahrhunderts : Oel // Lwd. 61 x 91 cm; in sehr schoenem Rahmen "der Zeit". - Moeglicherweise eine Variation des von Giovanni Battista Tiepolo gemalten Gemaeldes, das sich in National Gallery of Victoria in Australien befindet, in der Anordnung der Figuren aber in unterschiedlicher Farbgebung noch aehnlicher dem Bozzetto in der Sammlung Cognacq-Jay in Paris. Der Pariser Entwurf wie auch die 2,5 x 3,5 Meter grosse Komposition des Banketts in Melbourne gehoerten urspruenglich zu den etwa 20 Gemaelden, die der Kunstkenner und -agent Graf Francesco Algarotti zwischen 1743 und 1747 fuer den Dresdener Hof, namentlich fuer August III. Koenig von Polen und Kurfuerst von Sachsen, zur Vollendung der Dresdener Sammlung in Auftrag gab oder erwarb. - In dem vorliegenden Schriftverkehr zwischen dem ehemaligen Besitzer, dem Dirigenten Wilhelm Furtwaengler, und dem Restaurator Wilhelm Vetter aus dem Jahr 1933, der das Gemaelde dem Sohn von Giambattista zuschreibt, wird vermutet, dass die Signatur verlorenging, als das Bild beschnitten wurde.
