Daunian Polychrome Single Handle Kyathos

[ translate ]

Magna Graecia, Southern Italic, Daunian, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful polychrome pottery kyathos, or dipper, with a characteristically high, flattened, looped handle attached to a shallow bowl with a dramatically flared rim, all adorned in an attractive decorative program of black and red pigments on a cream ground. Particularly elaborate are the abstract decorations on the interior and base, which featured a stylized diamond design and a wheel motif with several concentric circles, respectively. A thick band of red paint embellishes the interior of the rim, while horizontal striations of red and black decorate the exterior walls. Vertical and horizontal stripes of pigment additionally adorn the high-rising handle. Size: 6.5" in diameter x 4" H (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm)

Daunian society included a blend of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area. Though many Daunian vessel forms were strongly influenced by the native Italians of this region, the kyathos was a Greek creation and the generous width of the strap was purely Daunian. A stunning example, replete with a brilliant silhouette and finely delineated decorative program.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private T. G. collection, Williston, Florida, USA, acquired in 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
