Dave Drake Signed and Dated Edgefield Stoneware Jar

(Edgefield District, South Carolina, b. circa 1800, d. after 1873) made by Dave Drake at Lewis Miles Stoneware Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, 1859, green alkaline glaze over ovoid form, rutile run under one of two applied strap handles, rounded rim, signed in script at shoulder "Lm Feb. 24, 1859, Dave", "+l" and "+l"ÿ marks on opposite shoulder of jar, 14-1/2 in.ÿNote: This jar was made during one of Dave's second most prolific years of signing and dating pieces while producing wares for Lewis Miles. - Provenance: Collection of Dr. Joseph T. and Gaile E. Condition Report: glaze voids and anomalies as made, several large areas of illumination under blacklight, apparent professional restorations to rim, handles, shoulder, body, and base interior, wear and chips around base edge, firing hairlines in interior
