Dave McGary was an American sculptor best known for highly realistic bronze depictions of Native American historical figures. Born into a ranching family in Cody, Wyoming, he showed artistic promise early and, as a teenager, studied anatomy and bronze casting with craftsmen connected to sculptor Harry Jackson’s Italian foundry. By the 1980s he had established his own studio and finishing facility in New Mexico, where he developed the historically detailed, polychromed bronze style for which he became widely known. McGary’s work is especially noted for its technical innovation, strong sense of movement, and careful cultural research, and his sculptures entered major public and museum collections, including the U.S. Capitol National Statuary Hall and the Smithsonian.
