David Cheepen, British b.1946 - The 2nd Honeymoon of Mr and Mrs Arnolfini, 1997; acrylic on board, signed and dated lower right 'D. Cheepen 8.12.1997', 28.1 x 40.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: The Geoffrey and Fay Elliot collection. Portal Gallery, London; private collection, purchased from the above in 1998; thence by descent Note: A contemporary play on Jan van Eyck's 15th century masterpiece 'The Arnolfini Portrait' in the National Gallery collection, this work demonstrates Cheepen's playful and subversive style. Contrasting art historical tradition with a sense of the Surreal, his precise realist technique transports you to a fantastical world. The artist has regularly played with the work of the Old Masters in his painting. Cheepen has exhibited internationally, including at the Portal Gallery, London, Gallerie Bruggen, Bergen and in Rimini and Philadelphia.
Held in a moulded wooden frame, with minor scuff marks. Painted surface in very good, original condition. Board in very good condition.
