David Ostrowski
David Ostrowski,
German b.1981-
F(Skull), 2011;
oil, lacquer and fleece on canvas, 60 x 50cm (ARR)
Provenance: Blain Southern, London
Exhibited: Blain Southern, London
Note: This work is from David Ostrowski’s series called 'The F Word', created for an exhibition of the same name held in the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj, Denmark in 2014. In this series, Ostrowski produced a number of artworks which are striking in their simplicity and abstraction, resulting from the artist’s sensitive and sparing use of his materials. Indeed, these pieces focus on the power of the medium to shape the final artwork, a concept which led Ostrowski to experiment with the use of a broad range of materials and techniques.
Ostrowski was interested in the possibilities of blue paint, particularly lacquer (due to the wide associations and uses of this colour, and the properties of the medium), and as such this piece can be understood to occupy a central place in Ostrowski’s series. Other similar works of blue paint on a white canvas are illustrated in ‘David Ostrowski: the f word’, exhibition catalogue from Ishøj: Arken Museum of Modern Art (2014), pp. 27, 99
