David Tod as OH Governor Signed Civil War-Dated Commission

A military commission signed by then Governor of Ohio David Tod (1805-1868), as "David Tod" at lower right. Issued from Columbus, Ohio on May 1, 1862. Also co-signed by Wilson S. Kennon (1826-1895), who served as Ohio Secretary of State between May 1862 - January 1863, as "W S Kennon" at lower center; and by Charles W. Hill, Adjutant General of Ohio, near lower left. Partly printed and partly manuscript on paper. Docketed with the commissioned officer's oath of office and relevant signatures verso. Bearing a "Duplicate" clerical cancellation mark near center. Expected paper folds, wrinkles, and toning. A few closed tears corresponding to folds have been repaired verso, else very good. 11.5" x 9.5."

Ohio Governor David Tod appointed one William Cessna to the rank of Second Lieutenant in the 82nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry for three years of service.

David Tod's tenure as the 25th Governor of Ohio was brief; he served only one term between 1862-1864 and was not reelected. While in office, Tod enthusiastically supported the Civil War effort through fundraising, recruitment, and outfitting medical corps. President Lincoln offered him the position of U.S. Secretary of the Treasury after Tod failed to secure the gubernatorial reelection, explaining that "Governor Tod has aided me more and troubled me less than any other governor."
