De Simone, (Italian, 19th/20th Century)
SY Varuna flying the burgee of the New York Yacht Club
SY Varuna flying the burgee of the New York Yacht Club
signed 'De simone' (lower right), inscribed 'S.Y. Varuna' (lower left)
gouache
44.5 x 63.5cm (17 1/2 x 25in).
Varuna was commissioned by Eugene Higgins in 1897. Designed by G.L. Watson and built by A & J Inglis, she was the third of three similar Watson designed yachts in 1897, the others being Mayflower and Nahma. Mr. Higgins spent most of his time in Europe and there are extensive newspaper articles tracking its location through the years; based on these we can place Varuna in Naples in 1900 where the present work would have been commissioned. Unfortunately, Varuna had a short career as she was wrecked in the Azores in 1909.
