Dean O'Dell (American, 1884-1940) The Clouds Can
Dean O'Dell (American, 1884-1940) The Clouds Can't Hide the Issue, Dayton Daily News newspaper cartoon, November 4, 1934 India ink, lithographic crayon, and gouache on heavyweight paper 15-1x4 x 10-1x2 inches (38.7 x 26.7 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Dean Dean O'Dell created this inspirational cartoon that was published in the Dayton Daily News on the day after the Congressional elections of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's first term in office. In an off-year election when they could have lost seats the President's party gained in both the House of Representatives and Senate for the first time in American history. Above all the oratory, tempest and partisanship FDR and his program for a New Deal for America had solid support from the American voter. Dean O'Dell was the lead editorial cartoonist for the Dayton Daily News, and his work was likely syndicated to other newspapers in the United States. In addition, he created at least two newspaper Sunday comics pages in the 1920s: Heinrich and The Once Over.
