Dean O'Dell (American, 1884-1940) Uncle Sam: "I Wonder What Those Fellows Know About War," Dayton Daily News newspaper cartoon, December 27, 1925 India ink on heavyweight paper 18 x 14-1x4 inches (45.7 x 36.2 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Dean Dean O'Dell created this striking original of Uncle Sam carrying the case for the "World Court and Disarmament" after World War I, and it was published in the Dayton Daily News on December 27, 1925. Uncle Sam has the bulky document tucked under one arm, much as President Woodrow Wilson carried the Treaty of Versailles to the U.S. Senate and addressed that body on July 10, 1919. In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson returned from France with the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, and the Senate refused to ratify it in November and the following March on the grounds that it would violate American sovereignty and could embroil the United States in future European conflicts. The US never joined the League of Nations, yet proposals for the country to join international organizations and peace-keeping plans continued to circulate. Leading opponents of the establishment of a World Court and disarmament treaties are labeled as "Senate Obstructionists" and include George Moses of New Hampshire, William Borah of Idaho and Hiram Johnson of California. Dean O'Dell was the lead editorial cartoonist for the Dayton Daily News, and his work was likely syndicated to other newspapers in the United States. In addition, he created at least two newspaper Sunday comics pages in the 1920s: "Heinrich" and "The Once Over."
