[ translate ]

Delphin Massier Majolica Large Butterfly Jardiniere
Circa 1890
Black painted uppercase mark, Delphin Massier / Vallauris. (A.M.)
Naturalistically modeled with upswept wings, perched on a pink chrysanthemum, supporting a similarly petaled conical vessel. Height 16 1/4 inches, width 20 1/2 inches.

Note:
Produced in at least two sizes. At the time of cataloguing no other examples of this rare large size were extant.

Provenance:
eBay, South America.

Literature:
Majolica International Society, Karmason Library, no. KL001596.

Reference:
Maryse Botero, Barbotines de la Côte d'Azur, p. 62.

C The Joan Stacke Graham Majolica Collection
Condition Report: Presents well; a professional restorer has over sprayed the entire exterior, making it extremely difficult to determine the extent of restoration that has been done; the interior appears to be untouched and shows evidence of even crazing; based on this type of evidence the professional restoration appears to be only to the wing tips and possibly to some of the legs; the restoration did not fluoresce under the blacklight

Any condition statement is given as a courtesy to a client, is an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact and Doyle New York shall have no responsibility for any error or omission. Please contact the specialist department to request further information or additional images that may be available.
