⁂ John Dennis was a poet, playwright and critic whose letters provide a unique insight into the world of literary London in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The Letters includes a letter to Thomas Parker, Lord High Chancellor and later first Earl of Macclesfield, a notable patron of the arts and sciences, begging him to accept "the two Volumes which I here present to you...Jan. 1.1719" (vol.1 p.148, passage marked in ink). This presumably refers to The Select Works, making them a presentation copy from the author.
