Signed "Derek. G. M./GARDNER." l.l., signed and inscribed on the tacking edge (see N.B.), a receipt from the Mystic Maritime Gallery and a typed letter detailing the history of the crossing are affixed to the backing.

N.B. The inscription on the tacking edge reads "Ships of the first United States battle squadron... to cross the Atlantic, May/June 1801./Ships l. to r. Frigate "ESSEX", 32 guns: Frigate "PRESIDENT", 44 guns (Commodor Richard Dale);/Schooner "ENTERPRISE:, 12 guns: Frigate "PHILADELPHIA", 36 guns."
