"The pre-war airlines were in competition with the great ocean liners, then at the height of their luxury and opulence. The Imperial Airways Gazette of July 1931 describes the clubby appointments of their airplane cabins, with "large windows, curtained with choice silks in their tastefully paneled walls, softly shaded-lights, big chintz covered armchairs into which one sinks luxuriously, soft carpets on the floors, and flowers on tables in front of every seat" (Riding the Skies p. 16).
