Desirable Large Format Engraving of General McClellan
Mammoth engraving entitled "GEO. B. McCLELLAN, U.S.A. Late Commander in Chief" from a photograph, with facsimile signature, in uniform. 18"x23". Water stain u/r, paper los in u/l margin, about very good condition. George B. McClellan (1826-1885) was a Union general during the American Civil War who organized and trained the Army of the Potomac into one of the Union's most effective fighting forces. A graduate of West Point, he served with distinction in the Mexican-American War before rising rapidly to command in 1861. Known for his skill as an organizer and his popularity with his troops, McClellan was nevertheless criticized for his cautious approach and reluctance to aggressively pursue Confederate armies, particularly during the Peninsula Campaign and after the Battle of Antietam. Removed from command by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, he later became the Democratic nominee for president in 1864, losing to Lincoln, and afterward served as governor of New Jersey.
