Detailed Roman Ceramic Plaque of Charioteer w/ TL Test

[ translate ]

Roman, Republic to Imperial period, ca. 250 BCE to 250 CE. A very finely detailed fragment of an ancient Roman ceramic Campagna figural relief depicting a charioteer. The man is standing in his chariot wearing a short tunic, leggings, and cap. He holds the slack reins in both hands and a whip, suggesting a casual trot rather than a full on gallop or racing speed. The hindquarters of his horse are visible. All is in high relief with very fine details. Note the attention and naturalistic rendering of the drapery folds across the man's body. Size: 5.75" L x 1.25" W x 10" H (14.6 cm x 3.2 cm x 25.4 cm); 12" H (30.5 cm) on included custom stand.
