Two Safavid bowls, Persia, 17th Century
the first of tinned copper, of squat form, narrowing at the neck and flaring at the rim, profusely engraved and decorated with a band of inscriptions to the neck, the body with foliate arabesque interlace; the second of bronze, of compressed globular form with flaring neck, engraved with bands of palmettes around the body, the neck with a series of inscription-filled cartouches interspersed by boteh

Inscriptions: to one, a Persian quatrain (for a piece with a similar text see A. S. Melikian-Chirvani, Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World, 8th-18th Centuries, 1982, p. 304); owner's name, 'Its owner, Mandegar the daughter of Shams'; to the other, two Persian couplets (for the first couplet see ibid, p.341; for a version of the second couplet see, ibid, 1982, p. 257).

An example of 17th Century bowl featuring a similar decorative programme to one of the bowls in the present lot is in Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Accession Number 791-1901).
