Hendrik Magdalenus (Dick) Bruna was born in Utrecht on 23 August 1927 and died there on 16 February 2017. Studied at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam. Pupil of Jos Rovers. Influenced by Henri Matisse, Bart van der Lek, George Braque and Gerrit Rietveld. In 1970, together with Pieter Brattinga, the company Mercis BV was founded to protect the rights of Dick Bruna's work. Known for the children's book series "Miffy" from 1955. Received various awards including: Het Gouden Penseel 1990 (Boris Beer) and the Affice-jaarprijs of the Genootschap van Reclame.
