Arduous laboratory preparation is required to reveal fossils of this locality from within their matrix, which is of similar density to the fossils themselves. Fossils from Holzmaden, Germany are highly desired for their exceptional preservation. Also appealing is the richly colored black-brown shale matrix of this locality. Remains of animals from the warm, Jurassic seas in the region now known as Germany evidence the warmer environment of the Earth 170-180 million years ago. Pachycormus is a rare genus from the Holzmaden shales.
