Dirck Stoop - Landscape with elegant figures
Dirck Stoop
Landscape with elegant figures
Oil on canvas (relined). 61 x 81 cm.
Dirk Stoop came from a family of artists. Extensive travels took him to Rome for several years, where he was influenced by Dutch artists painting in the Italian style. Around 1661 he was in Portugal and became court painter to the Infanta Catherine of Braganza. After her marriage to King Charles II (1630–1685), he followed her to London. In his late period he was also recorded in Germany.
Stoop’s œuvre reflects the cosmopolitan spirit of his age, characterized by a blend of Dutch realism, Italian influences and European courtly elegance. These characteristics of his painting can also be found in the present scene: the sunny, southern light that emphasizes the sharp contours; the confidently painted outlines, drawn in a single brushstroke; and the palette based on warm browns with luminous blues.
Provenance
Private collection, Austria.
