Professional book packaging. ---------------------------------------------- Dirk Smits (Rotterdam, 20 June 1702 - Hellevoetsluis, 25 April 1752) was a poet from Rotterdam, best known for his collection of poems ‘De Rottestroom’. In 1737 he published his first work, ‘Israëls Baälfegors dienst of gestrafte wellust’, in three volumes. This was followed in 1741 by 'Mengeldichten’ and in 1743 by ‘Over de poëtische verrukking’. From 1746 he worked for the admiralty in Hellevoetsluis. In 1750 he published his collection of poems ‘De Rottestroom’, which he dedicated to Stadtholder Willem IV. At the end of March 1752 he was bitten in the leg by a dog and although the dog was not rabid, he died from the consequences on 25 April 1752. He was buried in Hellevoetsluis. The three volumes of ‘Nagelaten gedichten’ were published by Nikolaes Versteeg in 1753-1764. In volume 3 Versteeg extensively describes the life of Dirk Smits.
