Dirk van der Kooij - Chair - Plastic
Endless Dining Chair
Dirk van der Kooij, 2016

L48x. W41x. H87cm, 18kg
Made in Zaandam, NL

In 2011, the Endless chair came to life as Dirk van der Kooij's hard-fought graduation project. In a worldwide first, he reconfigured a pneumatic robot arm to extrude furniture from recycled plastic. The first series consisted of gently tinted plastic threads, built up shakily to form 3D tapestries. A mal-aligned motor imparted a scalloped pattern, though was also responsible for the unlikely tacitly of the technique.
\r
This chair was made as part of the Endless Chair's second generation, and is made from a stronger and cleaner plastic than very early versions of the chair. The scalloped patterning has been exaggerated for enhanced textural effect. Having lived in the Kooij archive for close to a decade, the chair does carry some bumps and scratches. Overall, the chair is impressively strong and durable, ready for a lifetime of use. This Endless Chair is dining height.
