Disneyland – Matterhorn Bobsleds Control Button (Walt Disney, c. 1960s-70s). From Disneyland's wildly popular attraction Matterhorn Bobsleds – this is a control button, believed to be an emergency button inside the ride. Originally a dirt mound created from what was removed to make the moat around Sleeping Beauty Castle, the Matterhorn was initially named Holiday Hill, then Lookout Mountain, and eventually Snow Hill. The idea for the Matterhorn came to Walt during one of several trips he made to Switzerland: first in July 1953 and then five years later in July 1958 during filming of "Third Man on the Mountain." Born out of the desire to hide the unsightly Skyway attraction pylon, the Matterhorn Bobsleds were one of six new major attractions for Tomorrowland. Legend has it that Walt sent a postcard of the Swiss Matterhorn back to WED with the instructions to "Build this." At 147' high, it is a 1/100th replica of its Swiss namesake and the tallest structure inside Disneyland. Walt's response when he first saw the completed attraction was, "It's 10' too short." This fantastic piece of Disneyland memorabilia measures about 12" x 9". Constructed of fiberglass and painted to look like rocks with the button mounted in the center. A terrific display piece! In Very Good condition. HID09710052018 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
