Alice Davis Sketchbook Group of 2 (Walt Disney, 1949/1950). "And you have to learn to draw everything. You'll have a sketchbook and sketch all the time," Disney Legend Alice Davis (1929 – 2022) recalled Mrs. Chouinard telling her. This lot is a treasure trove of drawings, notes, and animation history! Both outstanding sketchbooks belonged to Alice Davis who was known for her costume design in her work on various attractions like "Pirates of the Caribbean", the "Flight to the Moon", and the 1964/65 "It's a Small World". Both measure 9'' x 12'' x 1''. The first sketchbook was used from 5/5/1949 to 4/21/1950. The second sketchbook has some varying dates that end with 5/3/1950. Both sketchbooks include a variety of graphite and ink sketches, life drawings, graphite and paint clothing designs, and class notes from Alice's time at Chouinard Art Institute. Some things of note in the first sketchbook include over 15 pages of notes with sketches from Marc Davis's (1913 - 2000) animation class, explorations of costume history and clothing from different countries, Alice's own costume designs, and a note about her mother. Included in the second book is a sketch of her dress for Helene Stanley – her first Disney project! - ideas for her initials with her maiden name, magazine reference, angel and holiday card designs, company information, and design factory procedures. And, of course, her signature on the inside cover in case either book was lost. Minor handling and edge wear, some binding and cover wear from use, light debris, and residue where drawings were pasted in. Good to Very Good condition overall for this once in a lifetime lot!
