Sergeant Ferris Arthur Newton was born in 1912 and joined the Royal Air Force qualifying as a Flight Engineer. He was posted to 76 Squadron 4 Group operating the Handley Page Halifax Bomber in 1943. The recommendation for the DFM is: “This N.C.O. has carried out 29 sorties as Flight Engineer and flown a total of 177 Operational hours. He has carried out attacks against many of the heaviest defended of targets including Berlin, two to Hamburg, two to Cologne and many to the Ruhr. The resourcefulness and cheerfulness, coupled with his outstanding ability with which he has carried out his duties has inspired confidence in his crew. His unconquerable spirit of determination to achieve his objective has always been of the highest order. It is considered that his tenacity of purpose, endurance and fine offensive spirit merits the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal”. Remarks of the Station Commander “This NCO in the face of heavy odds has shown courage and coolness of a very high order. The completion of a successful operational tour, by his crew is a large measure due to his co-operation and devotion to duty. Recommended for the award of the DFM”. Gazetted 15th February 1944. Sgt Newton was mentioned multiple times in Max Hastings' "Bomber Command". He died whilst living in Hull in 1985.
