Do Xuan Doan was born in Hanoi in 1937. He studied at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts. After graduating in 1961, he joined the army to fight in the Vietnam War (1955-1975).
Always experimental, Do Xuan Doan does not adhere to a single genre and his style instead covers realism, expressionism, surrealism, and abstraction. He also experiments with different techniques and materials, including collage, oil, acrylic, and lacquer. Using bold and vibrant colours, shapes, and textures, he produces expressive and sensual landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and abstract compositions. The objects depicted in his paintings are particularly inspired by the artist's everyday surroundings, especially in Hanoi.
Do Xuan Doan's career and experiences make him an influential figure in Vietnam's artistic sphere. He was one of the founders and leaders of the Young Artists Association, a vanguard art group that emerged in Saigon in 1966 and which challenged the conventional art practices of the time. Throughout his life, he has also been the teacher and mentor of generations of Vietnamese artists. Moreover, He has been the recipient of many awards and honours. Finally, his artworks are displayed in many private and public collections around the world.
