In the vast desert expanses of the state of Arizona bordered by high plateaus, called Mesa, the Hopi Indians perpetuate their ritual ceremonies to the rhythm of the seasons. Wearing masks and ritual outfits, the dancers embody the spirits whose help is necessary to regulate the rains and ensure a good harvest of beans and corn. Spirits of minerals, game, domestic animals, plants, trees, wind, the dead. . . the spirituality of all materiality, called Katsiman (or Kachina) is then invoked. The Hopis ask these messengers to use their beneficial power to help men live in harmony.
