A marine painter central to the development of the genre, Serres came to Britain as a prisoner of war in 1745, and made his home in England after his release. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. Unlike his dramatic military scenes, the present work conveys the tranquillity of the relatively still waters, and the small scale of the figures in their boats upon them.
