Donald Sultan is a distinctive figure in American postwar art who, since the 1970s, has developed a unique visual language bridging painting, sculpture, and printmaking. After earning his B.F.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Sultan established himself in New York as a proponent of an art form that combines industrial materials, monumental forms, and seemingly banal everyday motifs. His exploration of the visual culture of the American metropolis engages in a dialogue with artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol, who introduced everyday objects and the world of consumer goods into contemporary art. At the same time, his serial structures, focus on simple geometric shapes, and use of industrial materials recall Minimalist approaches—particularly that of Donald Judd—while his consistent reduction of color and the presence of black pictorial surfaces suggest art-historical connections to Frank Stella and Ad Reinhardt. Judd’s engagement with commercial materials and industrial production processes provides a particularly relevant context in this regard.
