Donald W. Kelley (American, 1939-2025), Untitled, 1968 Color Lithograph
Donald W. Kelley (American, 1939–2025) was a printmaker, sculptor, educator, and master lithographic printer associated with the Tamarind Lithography Workshop during the late 1960s. After earning a degree from the University of Tulsa and an MFA from Claremont Graduate School, Kelley received a Tamarind fellowship in 1968 and remained at the workshop as a printer for other contemporary artists. He later taught printmaking, drawing, and sculpture at the University of Cincinnati, where he served as a professor until 2010. In his 1968 Tamarind lithographs, Kelley arranged flat areas of color and smoothly curving forms into tightly controlled abstract compositions. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Untitled, 1968, color lithograph from stone and aluminum printed in blue, yellow-gray, red, and black on German Etching paper, printed and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. The inks overlap to produce a largely blue-violet and gray composition, with broad horizontal gradations surrounding a darker central field. Rounded bands fill the lower portion like closely layered waves, while heavier arcing forms sweep inward from above. The sheet was cut after printing to echo the composition, with an outward-flaring trapezoidal top and notched shoulders above the rectangular lower section. Inscribed in pencil on the verso “Tam Imp” at lower left, “German Etching Paper” at lower center, and “2468 / Don Kelley 1968” at lower right; bearing the Tamarind and Kelley blindstamps. “Tam Imp” identifies this as one of nine Tamarind impressions, separate from the numbered artist’s edition of eleven. The irregular sheet measures approximately 21.5 × 18.125 inches overall, with the lower section measuring approximately 12.5 × 15 inches. The sheet shows light toning, scattered small foxing spots on the verso, and old tape remnants with associated staining along the upper verso; minor wear is visible at the extremities of the shaped edges. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
