5th-3rd century BC. A curved axe head with an asymmetrical blade and ovoid socket. Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The axe belongs to the Dong Son culture, developed in Far East between 9th and 1st century BC. This culture traded extensively with other peoples of Southeast Asia. The influence of their art extends over present-day Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and as far as Indonesia. It is reflected in a great diversity of ritual objects in bronze, often decorated with human or animal motifs, including ritual drums and axes.
