Large, beautiful wooden panel to hang up, Chinese wooden carving from Dongyang depicting an emperor and scenes from a courtyard in three dimensions, gold lacquer on the front The back is not visible as it is protected and covered by the frame and a protective panel. It should be lacquered in red, however. From China, crafted in Dongyang From the period of the Republic, 1912-1949, perhaps even earlier Size: 60 x 40 x 5 cm (thickness) Size excluding frame: 47 x 26 cm In good condition, only missing part of the head of the character on the left, with the rest perfect and undamaged Even the gilding is still 90% present. The red lacquer can be seen underneath. This type of craftsmanship and sculptural mastery is still practised in some workshops in the Dongyang region of China, and most commonly appear as a particularly ornate decoration on everyday objects, such as cases, cabinets, stools, desks and tables. Perhaps the most ambitious manifestation of Dongyang's wooden sculptures are those made on wall panels, such as huge canvases destined to be hung like true works of art. These are in fact works of art of indeterminable value and unique among their kind. Over 100 tools are needed to create even the smallest detail. The most experienced craftsmen of this art know that there are dozens of different blades for creating the desired effect. If you look at these works closely, you will find that they are real paintings that have abandoned the two-dimensional form and are in fact three-dimensional, with tremendous precision and accuracy in the details.
