'Dorian Gray' Painter Ivan Albright ALS on His Titular Work For the Film
ALS

A scarce autograph letter signed by American painter Ivan Albright regarding his painting for the 1945 film 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. 2pp on thin onionskin paper, measuring 8" x 10", Warrenville, IL, April 17, n.y. [ca. 1945]. Signed at the conclusion of page 2 as "Ivan", he discusses the Art Institute's interest in borrowing the painting, which he believes is still being exhibited with the film. Light, offset toning to margins, with expected transmittal folds and edge wear throughout. Otherwise, very good.

In part:

"Did you ever do anything on the article you were writing on the painting of Dorian Gray?
The Art Institute would like to borrow the painting for their fall American show but I doubt very much that they can get it away as it will still be going around with the film. I suppose you are up to your knees in work- things are very quiet here but have started a new picture which is holding my interest..."

Ivan Le Lorraine Albright (1897-1983) was an American painter and sculptor best know for his use of shadows and macabre subject matter. In 1943, Albright was commissioned to create the titular painting for Albert Lewin's film adaptation of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. His naturalistic, exaggerated depictions of decay made him suited to create the image of the corrupted Dorian, which acted as a nightmarish foil to the painting used in the beginning of the film. Today, the painting in question hangs permanently in the Art Institute of Chicago, presumably the very place that Albright references in this letter.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
