Dorman H. Smith (American, 1892-1956) Say When!
Dorman H. Smith (American, 1892-1956) Say When!, Newspaper Enterprise Association Syndicated cartoon, circa 1943 India ink and lithographic crayon on heavyweight paper 20 x 17-1x4 inches (50.8 x 43.8 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Dorman H. Smith In 1943, during World War II, and again in 1946, in the war's immediate aftermath, United Mine Workers of America leader John L. Lewis led the coal miners out on strike, and in both cases the work stoppages threatened to hobble the nation at critical times. This cartoon, sporting a terrific caricature of the fiery and determined Lewis, graphically illustrates that Uncle Sam was in a bind due to a possible shortage of the crucial commodity. This original editorial cartoon by NEA-syndicated artist Dorman H. Smith was published in 1943 or 1946 in as many as 700 newspapers across the United States. Mr. Smith was on the art staff of NEA Service in 1921 and in the early-1930s moved to the Hearst organization; his cartoons appeared in Chicago's Herald Examiner and San Francisco Examiner. After service in World War II, he returned to NEA. His work was collected in the book One Hundred and One Cartoons by Dorman H. Smith, published in 1936. The artist inscribed this original to collector Murray Harris above his signature: "For Murray A. Harris with best wishes."
