Double-warp fabric

[ translate ]

wool; 148 x 222 cm

The double-warp weaving technique was introduced to Poland in the mid-18th century and was initially used to produce fabrics for manors and churches. In the 19th century, it took firm root in the villages of northeastern Poland, becoming, among other things, a key element of a young bride’s dowry. The technique experienced a great renaissance during the interwar and postwar periods, thanks in part to the efforts of Prof. Eleonora Plutyńska, who encouraged weavers to abandon rigid, factory-made patterns in favor of their own creative ingenuity.Today, double-warp weaving is experiencing a resurgence. This art is carried on by a small group of acclaimed masters of the tradition from Podlasie (including Bernarda Rość, Teresa Pryzmont, and Helena Pryzmont).
