Ieronimo Pallantieri, engraved title, full page portraits of author and Pope Gregory XIII (shaved at foot with loss of text), engraved architectural frontispiece, woodcut headpieces and initials, 29 only, of 32 smaller fine etchings depicting the Evangelists and episodes of Christ and the Virgin’s life, text printed within a border of typographical fleurons, D1 misbound and misprinted, with etching depicting the Crucifixion, p. 31 misnumbered 27, lacking E2, E3 misbound, Gg1 misbound and misnumbered, Gg3 misbound, p. 66 misnumbered, plate of the Pentecost on verso of p. 81 faded, lacking final blank, light age yellowing, some staining and spotting throughout, repairs to gutter of leaves, later quarter calf, marbled paper boards, the upper board featuring labels with modern shelf marks, new end papers, rubbed, [Mortimer, Harvard French, nos. 117-119], 4to, Viterbo, Agostino Colaldi [Rome, Giovanni Battista de Cavalieri], 1573.

***Variant 'A' including Pope XIII’s portrait of the epic poem on the Nativity, written in imitation of Sannazaro. Colaldi was the first printer at Viterbo (where Durante died in 1590). G.B. de Cavalieri was an engraver and publisher in Rome. One must assume that he is responsible for the engravings in this work.
