"Dutch Peasant Landscape with Farmstead", attributed to Jan Simon Voddigel (Amsterdam 1820 – 1862 Amsterdam)
Oil on canvas, lined. Signed at the bottom centre. Depicted is a rural scene with a thatched farmhouse in the foreground, before which a farmer's wife greets a passing visitor. To the right of the buildings, a gnarled oak rises; behind it extend meadows, shrubbery and groups of trees. A further settlement is suggested in the distance. The sky features animated cloud formations with partial breaks of light, characteristic of 19th-century Dutch landscape painting. The composition follows the classical repoussoir technique with a muted palette of brown, green and ochre tones. Signed at the bottom centre of the picture. In a historicising, partially gilded wooden frame with rocaille decoration. Extensive age-related craquelure. Minor losses distributed across the picture surface and along the border. The frame shows flaking gilding and minor damage. Size of the painting 30.5 × 39 cm, size of the frame circa 47 × 55.5 cm. Jan Simon Voddigel, Dutch landscape painter of the 19th century active in Amsterdam, stands in the tradition of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting, particularly in the succession of Meindert Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael.
